Al Fahidi Historical District, is one of those must-visit places that gives you a glimpse into Dubai’s past. It showcases a side of the city most people don’t expect. Whenever visitors came to see us, this was always one of my favorite spots to take them. Located along Dubai Creek, this charming neighborhood feels like stepping into a different era. It offers a refreshing contrast to the skyscrapers and busy malls of modern Dubai. It is a wonderful place to visit in the Winter.
As you wander through its narrow lanes, you’ll see traditional wind-tower houses, once the hallmark of local architecture. The area is dotted with art galleries, cultural centers, and museums like the Coins Museum, which is free to enter. You can even stop for a cup of traditional Arabic coffee at the Sheikh Mohammed Centre for Cultural Understanding. I love how the Al Fahidi neighborhood seems to preserve the soul of old Dubai. Each visit felt like discovering a hidden secret in a city constantly reaching for the future. For me, it was a reminder that Dubai isn’t just about glitz and bling. It has a rich history worth exploring, and it’s all right there for you to enjoy for free.
Visit Dubai Fountain Shows
The Dubai Fountain Shows were always a hit whenever friends and family came to visit us. Located at the base of the Burj Khalifa and adjacent to the Dubai Mall, these shows are spectacular. I’ve seen dancing fountains at other famous hotels and landmarks around the world, but none compare to these. In my opinion, they are the best fountain shows anywhere, though I will admit the next best ones are also in Dubai. (Stay tuned to read about those!)
The Dubai Fountain is an engineering marvel, shooting water up to 500 feet in the air—equivalent to a 50-story building. What makes them magical is how the water jets “dance” in sync with a wide range of music, from Arabic classics to global pop hits. Adding to the experience, the Burj Khalifa often lights up with LED shows during the fountain performances, creating a breathtaking combination of sound, water, and light.
Because of its location, thousands of people can enjoy the show from various vantage points around the Burj Khalifa Lake. Whether you’re standing on the promenade, grabbing a bite at one of the nearby restaurants, or watching from a bridge that crosses the lake, you’ll have a great view. The best part? It’s completely free, making it a must-do experience in Dubai.
Stroll Dubai Marina
The Dubai Marina was one of our family’s favorite spots, and it’s easy to see why. It truly has something for everyone. Whether you’re in the mood for a leisurely walk, a fun playground for the kids, or a bite to eat from one of the many food carts or restaurants, the Marina is a hub of activity and excitement. We loved wandering along the wide, pedestrian-friendly walkways that hug the water, taking in the street life and fun atmosphere.
One of our favorite pastimes was admiring the incredible yachts docked in the Marina. It was always fun to imagine who owned them and to guess their price tags. Some looked like floating palaces! With hundreds of dining options nearby, we could easily grab a quick shawarma or sit down for a more formal meal overlooking the water. And for those feeling adventurous, there were scooter or bike rentals that made exploring the area even more fun.
The Dubai Marina was one of those places we returned to again and again, and it never disappointed. Whether we were people-watching, enjoying the views of the surrounding skyscrapers, or simply taking in the energetic vibe, it always felt like the perfect outing. Plus, it’s completely free to enjoy the walkways, views, and ambiance, making it a top recommendation for anyone visiting Dubai.
Admire the Burj Khalifa Light Show
The Burj Khalifa Light Show is a sight you simply can’t miss when visiting Dubai. While it’s often paired with the Dubai Fountain Shows, the light displays on the world’s tallest building are a spectacle in their own right. What I loved most was how the shows were custom-designed to celebrate special events from around the globe.
On UAE National Day, for instance, the Burj Khalifa lights up in the vibrant colors of the UAE flag, creating a patriotic display. But the lights don’t stop there. The building has also been known to honor international events, holidays, and significant global news with beautifully choreographed designs. It’s a perfect example of how Dubai combines innovation with inclusivity, making everyone feel like they’re part of the celebration.
What’s even more incredible is the Burj Khalifa’s visibility. Its light show can be seen from miles away! I used to sit at the Dubai Little League fields, watching my son play baseball, and I could still catch glimpses of the lights on Burj Khalifa. It’s a testament to just how massive the tower is and how spectacular the light shows are. Even from that distance, the display was captivating and added a touch of magic to an already special evening.
Relax at Kite Beach
Kite Beach was one of our go-to spots for a laid-back day by the water. It’s the perfect place to relax, whether you’re a family with kids, a solo traveler, or a group of friends. The beach has an easygoing vibe, with soft sand and clear water, making it ideal for a swim or simply soaking up the sun.
One of the things I loved most about Kite Beach was the amazing view of the iconic Burj Al Arab in the distance—it’s such a quintessential Dubai backdrop. The beach is also lively with kite surfers skimming the waves. For families, there’s a great playground for kids, a splash pad, and food trucks lining the area, offering everything from local treats to international bites. There is even a Starbucks food truck there, a place I visited often when my kids were at their weekly surfing camp.
Even if you’re not looking to swim, Kite Beach is a fantastic spot for a walk or a jog along the beachfront path. It’s a place where you can enjoy Dubai’s natural beauty for free. For us, it was always a refreshing escape, combining the charm of a local hangout with the scenery Dubai is known for.

The Jumeirah Corniche is a hidden gem for anyone looking to enjoy Dubai’s coastline without the crowds. Stretching 14 kilometers along the Arabian Gulf, this picturesque path is perfect for a nice walk, a jog, or even a long-distance run. In fact, I trained for the Dubai Marathon along the running track here, and it quickly became one of my favorite spots in the city.
What sets the Corniche apart is its great views. On one side, you’ve got the waters of the Gulf, and on the other, landscaped areas and glimpses of Dubai’s skyline. The wide, well-maintained track is ideal for runners and walkers of all levels. There are plenty of benches, shaded areas, and water stations along the way.

Visit Alserkal Avenue
Alserkal Avenue is one of Dubai’s coolest spots for art, culture, and creativity. Located in the industrial area of Al Quoz, this former warehouse district has been transformed into a vibrant hub. It is filled with contemporary art galleries, indie cafes, and unique concept spaces. It’s the kind of place where you can wander for hours, discovering thought-provoking exhibits and meeting passionate creatives.
Even if you’re not an art enthusiast, there’s something captivating about the atmosphere here. Many of the galleries are open to the public, so you can experience world-class art without spending a dirham. It’s the perfect place to see a different side of Dubai. Experience Dubai’s Gold Souk
Experiencing Dubai’s Gold Souk is a must for anyone visiting the city, and it holds a special place in my heart. It’s where my husband actually bought my engagement ring. That’s ironic, given that we didn’t live in Dubai at the time, but it adds to the charm of the place. Over the years, I’ve bought many beautiful pieces here. I’ve taken all of my friends on the same journey, so they could experience the magic of the souk for themselves.
What makes the Gold Souk so fascinating is that it feels like stepping into history. The souk has been a thriving market for generations. As a history lover, I appreciated the fact that I was walking through a place that has stood the test of time. Yet it still feels so much the same as it always has. The market is alive with activity! Vendors sell everything from intricate gold jewelry to exotic treasures. People from all over the world come to shop and haggle.
Right next door is the Spice Souk, and together, they create an atmosphere that transports you to the heart of the Middle East. The scents of spices, the rich colors, and the energy of the crowd all blend together to give you that unique aura of Dubai’s cultural roots. It’s an experience you won’t forget, and best of all, it’s free to stroll and take it all in.
Discover Ras Al Khor Wildlife Sanctuary
Ras Al Khor Wildlife Sanctuary is a unique and peaceful spot. It offers a chance to experience nature without going too far from the city. I always opted for a guided tour to explore the Sanctuary, but it’s a fantastic option for those with a rental car. It is a haven for birdwatchers, with flamingos being a highlight, but what really stands out is the contrast between the lush wetlands and the vast, surrounding desert.
One of the things I loved most about visiting Ras Al Khor was getting that glimpse of the massive Arabian desert. The soft, red or beige sands stretch endlessly, dotted with sparse vegetation. Sunsets here are especially breathtaking. If you’re lucky, you might even spot the elusive oryx as you wander through the Sanctuary. It’s an experience that showcases the UAE’s surprising natural beauty, offering a refreshing change from Dubai’s modern landscape.
Watch the Palm Fountain at The Pointe
One more must-see free attraction is watching the Palm Fountain at The Pointe. We used to live near this free attraction, so it became a regular outing for us. Every time we visited, there was always a different show, making each experience unique. The Palm Fountain, which officially opened in 2020, is the world’s largest fountain. While The Pointe is currently undergoing a new phase of development, the Palm Fountain continues to operate, offering an incredible visual spectacle every evening.
