Getting There: A Smooth Voyage

Getting to Catalina Island is so easy! The Catalina Flyer departs from Newport Beach, while the Catalina Express sails from Dana Point, Long Beach, and San Pedro. We opted for the 7:45 AM voyage from Newport Beach, and before we knew it, we were arriving on the island. Avalon Bay shimmered in the morning light, providing an amazing backdrop for the crescent-shaped town climbing up the hillsides.

A Glimpse into History

Catalina Island has a rich history. Originally inhabited by the Pimuvit tribe of Native Americans, it wasn’t until the 16th century that European explorers first arrived on the island. In the 19th century, Catalina transitioned through periods of ranching and mining, eventually becoming a private hunting retreat owned by the Banning brothers.

The island was largely transformed in 1919 when William Wrigley Jr. purchased the majority of it and began developing it into a resort destination, highlighted by the construction of the Catalina Casino and the establishment of Avalon.

Our Catalina Island Day Trip: Strolling Around Avalon

Upon disembarking, we wandered through the cute streets flanked by colorful cottages and inviting shops. Many of these beach homes are vacation rentals. My husband and I made a note to plan an overnight trip to Catalina soon.

Our first stop was the Catalina Coffee & Cookie Company, where I indulged in an amazing peanut butter cookie and a much-needed coffee before our next adventure. I still dream about that cookie!

Walking along the shore, we passed the majestic Catalina Casino before checking in for the Aerial Adventure. This elevated obstacle course, among the trees in a small valley behind Descanso Beach Club, is easy to find.

Our guide, Ian, secured our harnesses and helmets, and for the next two hours, we tested our strength navigating various fun obstacles suspended between the trees.

With teenagers in our group, we tackled intermediate and advanced options, but there are also beginner routes perfect for younger adventurers. This experience is an absolute must for anyone visiting Avalon with teens or young adults.

Lunch by the Sea: Descanso Beach Resort

After our obstacle adventure, we returned to the Descanso Beach Resort for lunch at the outdoor patio. The atmosphere was lively, with a DJ, swimmers, loungers, and happy kids all around.

The resort offers a great beachfront experience with private cabanas, a seaside bar, and 180 degree views of the Pacific Ocean. The water was so clear, and we enjoyed delicious food and drinks while soaking up the sun and admiring the scenery.

Iconic Landmark: The Catalina Casino

Post-lunch, we walked back toward the main part of town, passing the iconic Catalina Casino. Built in 1929 by William Wrigley Jr., this landmark is no longer a gambling hall, but a gathering place for social events and entertainment.

Its Art Deco architecture and seaside location provide panoramic views of Avalon Bay. We admired the architecture and murals from the outside, taking plenty of photos.

Exploring the Island: Golf Cart Rentals

Next, we made our way to a golf cart rental shop across from the Trailhead Adventure Center, the visitor center for the Catalina Island Conservancy. With limited cars allowed on the island, golf carts are an essential part of Catalina’s charm.

Armed with a free map, our 6-seater cart took us up and around the hills of Avalon, offering numerous breathtaking photo opportunities. This is another must-do for first-time visitors on a day trip to Catalina Island.

Final Fun: Time to Explore on our Day Trip to Catalina Island

After our 90-minute golf cart adventure, we returned to town, where we found plenty of ways to fill our time before boarding the ferry back to the mainland. Ice cream shops, outdoor basketball courts, kayaking, paddle boarding, shopping, or simply relaxing on the beach were all within easy reach.

Conclusion: A Day to Remember

For adventure and fun, a day trip to Catalina Island promises a memorable experience. Whether you spend your day exploring the shops and cafes, snorkeling in crystal-clear waters, hiking scenic trails, or simply lounging on Descanso Beach, Catalina offers a delightful escape from the mainland. We had an amazing time, and will certainly return!
